Abstract: The present invention relates to a cost-effective, non-toxic, environmentally benign magnetic refrigerant for solid-state cooling systems. The magnetic refrigerant includes a two dimensional layered structure of transition metal trichalcogenide that exhibits inverse magneto caloric effect at room temperature and relatively low fields as well as high thermal and chemical stability. Moreover, the magnetic refrigerant is synthesized by chemical vapour transfer method and exhibits layer-dependent magnetic tunability, pronounced magnetic anisotropy, and magnetic ordering even when thinned down to form few-layers. Further, the magnetic refrigerant is lead-free, environmentally benign and is composed of earth abundant elements with a Van der Waals structure, thereby providing a miniaturized and flexible integration in solid state cooling systems for applications in thermal management and energy- efficient cooling devices.
