MUMBAI, India, July 24 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202541078854 A) filed by Manipal Academy Of Higher Education on September 16, 2025, for A Method And Composition For Fabricating Biomimetic Bone Scaffold With Radial Gradient Porosity.

Abstract: The invention discloses a three-dimensional biomimetic bone scaffold (100) fabricated by extrusion-based 3D printing from a synthetic polymer-ceramic composite, infused with a biocompatible polymeric ground matrix (103). The scaffold (100) incorporates a continuous radial pore size gradient transitioning from a dense cortical-mimicking outer region to a highly porous cancellous- mimicking inner region, achieving a total porosity of 70–80% with interconnected pores ranging from 100 to 500 µm and a compressive strength of 2–12 MPa. The dual-layer repeating architecture, comprising alternately stacked concentric circle and fractal- patterned layers, enables precise spatial control of porosity and mechanical properties. Post-processing through freeze-drying, crosslinking, and sterilization yields a patient-adaptable construct suitable for bone defect regeneration, offering a biomimetic, mechanically competent, and biologically conducive platform for bone tissue engineering applications.
