Abstract: The present disclosure addresses limitations associated with conventional diabetic retinopathy screening by providing a computer-implemented method and system (110, 210) for automated detection and severity classification of diabetic retinopathy from retinal fundus images. A retinal fundus image (106) acquired using a retinal imaging device (104) is received and subjected to image quality assessment and preprocessing by an image acquisition and preprocessing module (212). Hierarchical retinal features are extracted and classified using a trained deep learning model to determine a diabetic retinopathy severity class. An explainability module (218) generates a heatmap that is overlaid on the retinal fundus image to identify retinal regions contributing to the prediction. A severity assessment and report generation module (220) computes a confidence score and generates a diagnostic report for storage and communication to authorized user interfaces (232, 234, 236, 238). The disclosure improves diagnostic transparency, reliability and clinical decision support.
