Abstract: The present disclosure proposes a method for preparing a boronic acid functionalized graphene oxide-chitosan hybrid film exhibiting enhanced bacterial capture, antibacterial activity, biofilm inhibition, substrate adhesion, mechanical stability, and multi-surface coating performance through synergistic integration of functionalized graphene oxide within a chitosan matrix. The method comprises covalently functionalizing graphene oxide with 4-aminophenylboronic acid to obtain APBA-modified graphene oxide (AGO) bearing boronic acid functional groups, incorporating the AGO into a chitosan solution to form a hybrid nanocomposite composition, and applying it onto a substrate to form a self-adhesive antibacterial film. The boronic acid functional groups form reversible covalent bonds with cis-diol-containing bacterial surface biomolecules, facilitating bacterial capture, while graphene oxide induces membrane disruption and oxidative stress, and chitosan provides contact-killing activity. The hybrid film exhibits substrate-independent adhesion on glass, metal, plastic, and titanium, with enhanced mechanical strength, thermal stability, reduced swelling, and potent antibacterial and anti-biofilm efficacy against E. coli and S. aureus.
