MUMBAI, India, Oct. 12 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202641118323 A) filed by Princya S. on October 03, 2026, for A Method For Preparing An Aqueous Alkaline Electrolyte From Post-Consumer Polyethylene Terephthalate (pet) Plastic Waste.

Inventor includes Princya S..

The application for the patent was published on October 09, 2026, under issue no. 41/2026.

Abstract: The present invention relates to a method for preparing an aqueous alkaline electrolyte from post-consumer polyethylene terephthalate (PET) plastic waste is disclosed. Cleaned and shredded PET is subjected to alkaline hydrolysis with potassium hydroxide at 110-115 °C to yield dipotassium terephthalate (K2TP) and ethylene glycol (EG). The K2TP is separated by filtration, washed and dried, while the EG-containing filtrate is decolorised with activated carbon and vacuum distilled to obtain purified EG. The purified K2TP is dissolved in water and the purified EG, from the same waste stream, is added as an ionic conductivity enhancer to form the electrolyte. In a zinc-manganese dioxide primary cell, the electrolyte gave an initial open-circuit voltage of 2.9 V and powered a wall clock and a television remote for about 5.5 months. The method converts waste PET into a functional battery electrolyte.
