Abstract: The present invention discloses a method for synthesizing radiation grafted membranes using gamma radiation–induced mutual grafting. The method comprises irradiating an ethylene tetrafluoroethylene (ETFE) polymer film in the 7 14 21 presence of 1-vinylimidazole monomer, whereby free radicals generated on both the polymer backbone and the monomer enable grafting of imidazole functional groups onto the ETFE matrix. The effect of radiation dose and dose rate on grafting efficiency, morphology, thermal, mechanical, and electrochemical properties of the resulting membranes is evaluated. The radiation grafted membranes exhibit improved physicochemical stability, enhanced thermal and mechanical characteristics, and stable electrochemical performance. The disclosed method provides a controlled approach for producing imidazole-functionalized ETFE membranes suitable for electrochemical energy applications. Accompanied Drawings [Figure 1-13]
