Abstract: TITLE: A METHOD OF DETECTION OF ALUMINIUM PHOSPHIDE RESIDUES IN RICE SAMPLES APPLICANT: KARUNYA INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY AND SCIENCES ABSTRACT The present invention discloses a portable detection system for detecting aluminium phosphide residues in rice samples and other food grains. The system comprises a sealed sample containment unit configured as a test tube adapted to receive a rice sample and an aqueous medium for initiating hydrolysis of aluminium phosphide residues. A reaction initiation mechanism facilitates generation of phosphine gas, which migrates through a gas transfer pathway defined within the sample containment unit. A reagent-coated detection medium comprising a strip or thin layer chromatography plate is positioned above the reaction mixture for exposure to the generated phosphine gas without direct liquid contact. A closure element comprising a rubber stopper maintains sealed reaction conditions and supports the detection medium. Interaction between phosphine gas and a reagent coating selected from silver nitrate, mercuric chloride, or lead acetate produces a visible colour change, thereby enabling rapid visual detection of aluminium phosphide contamination. The system provides a portable and instrument-free arrangement for on-site screening of food grains.
