Abstract: An interactive storytelling device and a method of operating the same are disclosed. A processor receives a user input indicative of a selected operating mode and determines whether it corresponds to an online storytelling mode or an offline storytelling mode. In the online mode, a content request is transmitted to a remote computing system and narrative content generated in response is received. In the offline mode, narrative content is retrieved from a local storage medium. Narration is output through an audio output device. An emotional characteristic of the narrative content is determined and at least one visual output device is controlled based on the emotional characteristic while the narration is being output.
