Abstract: The present invention relates to a mobile robotic system for real-time mapping and localization. This is a ROS-based autonomous mobile robot for real-time mapping, localization, and navigation using a 2D LiDAR sensor. The system is built on a Raspberry Pi 4 running Ubuntu 20.04 and ROS Noetic and employs SLAM algorithms such as Hector SLAM or Gmapping to generate two-dimensional occupancy grid maps while simultaneously estimating the robot’s position. The robot features a differential drive chassis with motor control integrated through ROS nodes, enabling autonomous navigation and obstacle avoidance in indoor environments. Environmental data from the LiDAR sensor is processed in real time, allowing the robot to continuously update the map and adjust its path. Visualization of the robot’s pose and surrounding environment is provided using RViz, and teleoperation is supported through keyboard, joystick, or mobile interfaces. The invention provides a low-cost, modular, and scalable solution suitable for research, educational, and industrial applications in indoor autonomous robotics.
