Abstract: A modular metal hydride hydrogen storage reactor featuring an integrated concentric heat exchanger system for improved thermal management. The reactor comprises a pressure-resistant outer housing containing a powder bed of hydrogen-absorbing alloy, within which a central straight tube and surrounding helical tubes are embedded to circulate heat transfer fluid. Brazed fins on the tubes form a mesh-like structure that enhances axial and radial heat transfer, ensuring uniform temperature distribution throughout the hydride bed. An optional water jacket with internal baffles further improves peripheral heat management. The compact and scalable design minimizes adequate bed thickness while maintaining high storage density, enabling efficient hydrogen absorption at moderate pressures (5–35 bar) and desorption at elevated temperatures ( 70 °C). The architecture supports stationary, mobile, and industrial hydrogen applications, offering improved kinetics, structural simplicity, and adaptability compared to conventional systems.
