Abstract: ABSTRACT [0013] Water scarcity has emerged as one of the most pressing challenges facing urban and rural communities worldwide, with India experiencing significant stress on its freshwater resources due to rapid urbanization, population growth, and climate variability. This design thinking project addresses the critical issue of grey water management in residential buildings, focusing on both existing structures and new constructions. Grey water, which constitutes approximately 50 - 75% of total household wastewater, originates from showers, sinks, washing machines, and laundries, and is considerably less contaminated than blackwater from toilets. The central perspective of this project is to conserve water before it enters the sewage system, where although it undergoes treatment, the opportunity for direct household reuse is lost. The project explores sustainable and economical on-site treatment solutions that enable grey water to be recycled for non-potable purposes such as toilet flushing, garden irrigation, floor cleaning, and vehicle washing.By implementing grey water recycling systems, households can reduce freshwater consumption by 27 -45% depending on the scale of implementation and usage patterns. This approach not only addresses water conservation but also reduces the burden on municipal sewage infrastructure, decreases wastewater generation by approximately 50%, and provides economic benefits through reduced water bills. The design thinking methodology employed in this project emphasizes user - centered solutions, considering the unique challenges faced by both retrofitting existing buildings and incorporating systems into new constructions. Through comprehensive analysis of treatment technologies, economic feasibility, implementation strategies, and policy frameworks, this project aims to demonstrate that grey water management is not merely an environmental initiative but a practical necessity for achieving water security and sustainability in residential settings.
