Abstract: The present invention relates to a mycelium-based formulation for wastewater treatment and a process thereof for capture and partial biodegradation of microplastics from contaminated wastewater. The formulation comprises living fungal biomass derived from Pleurotus ostreatus, Trametes versicolor, or combinations thereof integrated with a biodegradable polymer matrix comprising starch, chitosan, glycerol, and sodium alginate to form an interconnected porous bio-foam structure. The fungal biomass and polymer matrix are combined in defined ratios to provide enhanced porosity, elasticity, particle retention, and aqueous stability. The developed bio- foam enables entrapment of polyethylene, polystyrene, polypropylene, and polyethylene terephthalate microplastics while simultaneously promoting oxidative surface modification through extracellular fungal enzymes. The invention further provides a scalable process involving fungal colonization, polymer blending, foam generation, freezing, and freeze drying for development of reusable and biodegradable wastewater remediation bio-foam structures.
