Abstract: A non-regeneratively cooled nozzle assembly (100) for a solid-propellant rocket motor includes a casing (102-1,102-2) defining a combustion gas flow path extending from a combustion chamber portion (102-1) toward an exhaust portion (102-2). The assembly (100) includes a center-body assembly (104) disposed at an opening of the exhaust portion (102-2) defining a throat region and an expansion region. The throat region defines a discontinuous flow-control interface. The discontinuous flow-control interface includes a primary flow-guiding surface; a step surface extending from the primary flow-guiding surface; and a secondary flow-guiding surface disposed downstream of the step surface. The discontinuous flow-control interface is configured to induce controlled flow separation and formation of a recirculating flow structure adjacent the step surface. The recirculating flow structure forms a fluidic shielding zone configured to reduce direct impingement of particulate matter on at least a portion of the nozzle assembly (100).
