Abstract: ABSTRACT Title A NOVEL CONTROL & MODULATION TECHNIQUE FOR SINGLE- STAGE POWER ELECTRONIC TRANSFORMER The present invention discloses a single-stage, single-phase AC-AC solid-state transformer system incorporating two regulated DC-links comprising a primary side three-leg bridge to receive a line frequency AC input with current control, form a regulated DC bus and simultaneously produce a high-frequency excitation from the differential of two switch node voltages. The secondary side is also a three-leg bridge to receive the high-frequency ac waveform, form a regulated dc bus and form that producing a line frequency AC output with both the current and voltage control capability. An instantaneous phase shift modulation strategy is invented to meet power balance or MMF (Magnetomotive Force) balance like line-frequency transformer (LFT) in single-stage power electronic transformers (SST). This instantaneous phase-shift modulation matches the input power with output power, thereby significantly reducing the DC bus capacitance size. The invented phase-shift modulator uses a switching frequency ramp multiplied actual power calculator and a SR flip-flop based digital sampler of phase-shift from the switching frequency ramp information. The simplistic implementation of phase-shift modulator eliminates the need for costly sensors and high-end controllers.
