MUMBAI, India, Nov. 2 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202611065891 A) filed by Indian Institute Of Technology Banaras Hindu on May 25, 2026, for A Passive Solar Updraft Pole System For Mitigation Of Urban Air Pollution.

Inventors include Om Prakash Singh; Ankit Kumar; Jaydeep Singh; Neeraj Kumar; and Pushpendra Kumar Shukla.

The application for the patent was published on October 30, 2026, under issue no. 44/2026.

Abstract: The present invention provides a passive solar updraft pole system for mitigation of urban air pollution comprising a vertical hollow pole (4) defining an internal airflow channel between one or more air inlet openings (1) and an upper outlet opening (6). One or more conical solar absorber/collectors (8) are externally mounted on the vertical hollow pole (4) in vertically spaced relation to absorb solar radiation (7) and transfer heat to adjacent air. The conical solar absorber collectors (8) define a multi-inlet airflow configuration that induces simultaneous entry of polluted ambient air (2) through the air inlet openings (1). Solar heating generates buoyancy-driven natural convection causing heated air to rise through the vertical hollow pole (4), thereby creating a pressure differential that draws polluted ambient air (2) from street level and discharges the air through the upper outlet opening (6) above a pedestrian breathing zone.
