MUMBAI, India, June 26 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202621039231 A) filed by Ms. Dilsar Gohil; and Dr. Megha Patel on March 29, 2026, for A Pharmacologically Active Herbal Composition Comprising Rauwolfia Serpentina Extract For Antihypertensive And Central Nervous System Depressant Activity.
Inventors include Ms. Dilsar Gohil; and Dr. Megha Patel.
The application for the patent was published on June 19, 2026, under issue no. 25/2026.
Abstract: The present invention relates to a pharmacologically active herbal composition comprising an alkaloid-rich extract of Rauwolfia serpentina. The composition exhibits significant antihypertensive and central nervous system depressant activities attributed primarily to the presence of reserpine and other indole alkaloids. The mechanism involves irreversible inhibition of vesicular monoamine transporters, resulting in depletion of neurotransmitters such as norepinephrine, dopamine, and serotonin, thereby reducing sympathetic activity and blood pressure. Experimental pharmacological studies conducted on Wistar rats demonstrate a significant reduction in systolic and diastolic blood pressure in DOCA-salt induced hypertensive models. Additionally, CNS depressant activity was confirmed through reduced locomotor activity. The invention provides a natural, safe, and effective alternative for the management of hypertension and neuropsychiatric disorders with potential industrial applicability in herbal drug development.
