Abstract: Arsenic contamination in water is a major environmental and public health concern, particularly in regions that depend on groundwater for drinking. Long-term exposure to arsenic can lead to serious health problems, including cancer and other chronic diseases. In this study, a simple and portable optical method was developed for the on-site detection of arsenic in water. The method uses chlorophenol red as a colour-sensitive reagent. When arsenic(III) reacts with Chlorophenol red in an acidic solution (pH 3), the colour changes from red to magenta and the intensity of this change increases with arsenic concentration. A portable sensing device was designed using a compact spectral sensor, a controlled light source and an ESP8266 microcontroller to measure absorbance in real time. Calibration results showed a strong linear relationship (R² 0.99) in the concentration range of 0.1-10ppm, with a limit of detection of 0.07ppm. The method was tested with laboratory-prepared, drinking and environmental water samples, showing good accuracy and recovery. This low-cost and rapid approach offers a practical solution for field-based arsenic monitoring and safe water management.
