MUMBAI, India, Aug. 10 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202611074870 A) filed by Indian Council Of Agricultural Research on June 17, 2026, for A Process For Preparation Of Chitin Nanocrystals And Chitin Nanofibers.
Inventors include Martin Xavier K. A.; Soibam Ngasotter; and George Ninan.
The application for the patent was published on July 31, 2026, under issue no. 31/2026.
Abstract: The present invention relates to a process for preparation of chitin nanocrystals (ChNCs) and chitin nanofibers (ChNFs) from chitin using steam explosion-assisted citric acid hydrolysis. The present invention further relates to cyclic steam explosion treatment for structural disruption of chitin, controlled hydrolysis of amorphous regions, mechanical disintegration and separation of chitin nanocrystals and chitin nanofibers from a common treated substrate, surface functionalization of chitin nanomaterials, preservation of crystalline structure, and recovery of citric acid from the reaction medium for reuse. The prepared chitin nanomaterials are useful in polymer composites, biodegradable films, coatings, packaging materials, biomedical materials, adsorption systems, water treatment applications, cosmetics, and agricultural formulations.
