Abstract: The present invention generally relates to a process for the synthesis of zinc-aluminium layered double hydroxide (ZnAl-LDH) utilizing industrial waste sources, specifically low-grade zinc ash and aluminium dross rejects. The method involves separately leaching these pre-treated wastes with sulphuric acid to prepare zinc and aluminium sulphate liquors, followed by rigorous purification to remove impurities like heavy metals and ammonia. The synthesis proceeds via co-precipitation by simultaneously adding the liquors into a reaction vessel at a Zn/Al molar ratio of 2:1 to 3:1, maintaining a constant pH of approximately 10.0 using an alkaline solution. The resulting precipitate is aged at 60°C for at least 12 hours to enhance crystallinity, then separated, washed, and dried between 80°C and 90°C. Additionally, a carbonate ion exchange step may be employed to replace interlayer sulphate ions. This process provides a sustainable, cost-effective route for converting industrial waste into high-value functional materials.
