Abstract: The invention provides a method for the production of fine chemicals L-rhamnose and 5-methylfurfural starting from green seaweed Ulvasp. The method consists of collecting, drying, sizing the seaweed biomass followed by extraction of sulfated polysaccharide ulvan. Next step involves treatment of an aqueous solution of ulvan (2- 10 wt%) with a heterogeneous solid catalyst to depolymerize the algal polysaccharide into a solution containing L-rhamnose, xylose, uronic acids, glucose, sulfate under mild conditions (90-120 oC, 8-24 h). Subsequent treatment of the solution (hydrolysate) with anionic resins and recrystallization produces high purity L- rhamnose. The L-rhamnose obtained was also further selectively converted to aroma chemical 5-methylfurfural in a three-component biphasic system comprising a ketone, water and toluene in the presence of catalytic amounts of Nb based solid acids under industrially relevant conditions (150-180 oC, autogenous pressure, 1-5 h, 600 rpm).
