Particularly, the present disclosure relates to a process for the preparation of 6-bromo-2-chloro-8-cyclopentyl-5-methylpyrido[2,3- d]pyrimidin-7(8H)-one. The process of the present disclosure is simple, cost effective and environment friendly; and provides 6-bromo-2-chloro-8-cyclopentyl-5- methylpyrido[2,3-d]pyrimidin-7(8H)-one with a comparatively better purity and better yield.
