Abstract: Abstract A Process for the Preparation of Veterinary Topical Pharmaceutical Composition Comprising Zinc Oxide Nanoparticles for Ovine Foot Rot A veterinary topical pharmaceutical composition for the management of ovine foot rot caused by Dichelobacter nodosus is disclosed, comprising zinc oxide nanoparticles (particle size 100 nm) homogeneously dispersed in a petroleum-jelly-based semisolid carrier vehicle at a concentration of about 2000 µg/mL, together with a process for its preparation comprising heating and liquefying petroleum jelly, incorporating a zinc oxide nanoparticle stock suspension under continuous stirring, and cooling to obtain the composition in paste form. The composition exhibits antimicrobial activity against D. nodosus over a concentration range of about 1000 µg/mL to about 8000 µg/mL, benchmarked against standard antibiotic discs of enrofloxacin and oxytetracycline, and acceptable in vitro cytocompatibility on L929 fibroblasts. In naturally infected sheep, the composition produced a significantly lower lameness score, lower rectal temperature and respiratory rate, and a significantly reduced mean time to complete clinical recovery, relative to conventional antibiotic therapy, thereby providing an antibiotic-sparing topical option for managing ovine foot rot.
