MUMBAI, India, July 13 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202611052080 A) filed by Indian Institute Of Technology, Mandi on April 24, 2026, for A Process For Upcycling Polyethylene Terephthalate (pet) Waste.

Abstract: The present disclosure relates to a process for upcycling polyethylene terephthalate (PET) waste to recover bis(2-hydroxyethyl) terephthalate (BHET) by catalyst-enabled glycolysis using biomass-derived ethylene glycol in the presence of a heterogeneous Ni2P- SiO2 catalyst. The process is particularly suitable for coloured and multilayer PET feedstocks, for which isolated BHET may be optionally purified using activated carbon. The Ni2P-SiO2 catalyst can be regenerated and reused for multiple reaction cycles with minimal loss of activity. The recovered BHET may be optionally converted to terephthalic acid (TPA) and terephthaloyl dichloride (TCL). The process provides a sustainable and scalable route for chemical upcycling of PET waste. Fig.3
