MUMBAI, India, Aug. 10 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202511000293 A) filed by Council Of Scientific And Industrial Research, An Indian Registered Body Incorporated Under The Regn. Of Soc. Act Act Xxi Of on January 02, 2025, for A Process Of Bromine Production From Sea/Subsoil Brine/ Bromide Solution Using Solid Acid Catalyst.
Inventors include Sumit Balkrishna Kamble; Jasbir Kaur Mahey; and Arvind Kumar.
The application for the patent was published on July 31, 2026, under issue no. 31/2026.
Abstract: The present invention relates to a chlorine-assisted cold bromide oxidation process that replaces hazardous soluble mineral acids with self-regenerative and recyclable solid acid catalysts. These solid acids achieved 95-99% bromine extraction from bromide present in sea/subsoil-brine/standard bromide solutions during cold oxidation. The catalysts demonstrated self-regeneration properties, were easily recoverable, and could be recycled multiple times. The process eliminates the need for neutralization steps for the debrominated brine, as no soluble mineral acids were used, enhancing environmental friendliness and sustainability compared to traditional commercial processes.
