MUMBAI, India, June 30 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202431102645 A) filed by Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited on December 24, 2024, for A Process To Convert Coal Into Methanol Through Oxy-Steam Blown Fluidized Bed Gasification Method.

Inventors include Tirupathi Naidu Chintala; Naga Mohan Ittagunta; Gunasekaran Aroram; Siva Rama Krishna Nakka; Rasesh Kotdawala; Abhishek Kumar Pandey; Phani Kumar Eslavathu; Prakash Ramchandra Khadilkar; and Chengala Damodara Madhusoodana.

The application for the patent was published on June 26, 2026, under issue no. 26/2026.

Abstract: This invention relates to a process to convert coal into methanol through oxy-steam blown fluidized bed gasification method. Coal is gasified in bubbling fluidized bed gasifier by employing blend of oxygen and steam as fluidizing medium and carbon dioxide as transport medium resulting in the generation of syngas from which fines are separated in the cyclone and recycled back to gasifier through loop seal to improve the carbon conversion, and fines, ammonia, carbonyl sulfide, hydrogen sulfide are removed, and further from conditioned gas carbon dioxide concentration reduced and, further compressed syngas is admitted to methanol synthesis loop containing two adiabatic reactors with one cooler therebetween and the low pressure crude methanol is purified in distillation column to meet the required purity. This invention is applicable to the field of feedstock (coal, biomass, pet coke) gasification, syngas to methanol and other applications of syngas generated from gasification of any carbonaceous feedstock.
