MUMBAI, India, Nov. 2 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202631028794 A) filed by Indian Institute Of Technology Indian School Of on March 11, 2026, for A Process To Estimate Pore Pressure In Carbonates Integrating Connection Gas And Drilling Data.

Inventors include Souvik Sen; and Sayantan Ghosh.

The application for the patent was published on October 30, 2026, under issue no. 44/2026.

Abstract: This invention presents a cost-effective approach of constraining and quantifying carbonate pore pressure that can be used in real-time, during drilling. This invention quantifies calibrated pore pressure (PP) in carbonates using connection gas/pump-off gas data following reservoir engineering principle, which the traditional pore pressure modelling approaches lack. A mud logging unit (M) analyses the drilling cuttings collected on shale shaker during drilling, a gas detector sensor (G) provides the amount of connection gas (Qcg), a logging while drilling (LWD) tool (L) provides the quantitative data of downhole mud weight (DMW). It presents a calibration method and process improvement in the connection gas-based pore pressure estimation technique, which is otherwise qualitative and lacks calibration. This approach is scalable to siltstones non-reservoirs and can also be used to constrain shale pore pressure estimated from traditional normal compaction trend (NCT)-based approach. The proposed invention provides a workflow that employs multisource data to constrain and quantify formation pore pressure (PP) in carbonate rocks.
