Abstract: ABSTRACT A RECONFIGURABLE BUCK-BOOST BASED ACTIVE CELL BALANCING SYSTEM FOR LITHIUM-ION BATTERIES The present invention discloses a reconfigurable buck-boost based active cell balancing topology for a plurality of series-connected electrochemical cells (101, 102, 115, 116). The topology comprises a first limb and a second limb interconnected through an inductor (110) and a plurality of switching elements (103–108, 111–114) configured to selectively connect, isolate, or bypass individual electrochemical cells. The switching elements are configured to establish a charging current path from a selected source electrochemical cell to the inductor (110) and a discharging current path from the inductor (110) to a selected target electrochemical cell. Intrinsic body diodes of the switching elements provide conduction paths without requiring external diode networks or balancing capacitors. The topology enables controlled energy transfer between non-adjacent electrochemical cells using a single inductor (110) with reduced switching complexity and minimized component count. FIG. 1
