MUMBAI, India, July 24 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202611062162 A) filed by Indian Institute Of Technology Roorkee on May 15, 2026, for A Rectangular Coplanar Labyrinthine Acoustic Metamaterial With Partitioned Variable-Width Cavities For Compact Broadband Low-Frequency Sound Absorption.

Abstract: The present invention relates to a rectangular coplanar labyrinthine acoustic metamaterial having partitioned variable-width cavities for compact broadband low-frequency sound absorption. The structure comprises multiple partitioned cavities, where each cavity contains straight-folded labyrinthine channels whose channel widths vary along the length of the cavity. The partitioned cavities are coupled with a perforated panel having specifically configured holes aligned with the beginning of each partitioned cavity. The interaction between perforations and cavities generates multiple coupled resonances, resulting in broadband absorption with high efficiency in the low-frequency regime. The metamaterial achieves high absorption coefficients above 0.7 and peak values exceeding 0.9 within the 500–1000 Hz range while maintaining a deeply sub-wavelength thickness. The design is simple, manufacturable, tunable, and suitable for applications in noise control systems.
