Abstract: The present invention relates to a robotic wheelchair that uses an omnidirectional sensing suite combined with a ROS (Robot Operating System)-based autonomous navigation system. The robotic wheelchair comprises a suite of sensors, including 3D LiDAR, stereo vision cameras, range-finder sensors, IMUs, etc., allowing the use of real-time SLAM to generate dynamic occupancy grids and accurate spatial maps for localization and obstruction detection. Further, the present invention utilises a modified A* global path planning algorithm and a Dynamic Window Approach (DWA) at the local level for trajectory adjustments. Additionally, a mobile application integrated with cloud-based services allows users to remotely summon the wheelchair using a unique identifier, upon which the system autonomously navigates from a docking station to the user. The proposed invention provides significant technical advancement in assistive mobility systems by improving autonomy, navigation accuracy, user convenience, and operational safety in both indoor and semi-structured environments.
