Abstract: ABSTRACT A ROTATIONAL SECTOR-GATED DEEP BRAIN STIMULATION SYSTEM AND METHOD FOR DESYNCHRONISING NETWORK ACTIVITY A deep brain stimulation (DBS) system and method are disclosed for disrupting pathological beta-band synchronisation within the subthalamic nucleus (STN) - globus pallidus externus (GPe) network. The electrode is divided into a plurality of angular sectors arranged circumferentially about its axis. A sector-sequencing controller (140) activates the sectors one at a time, in a cyclic sequence, at a rotation frequency, delivering a charge-balanced biphasic stimulation current through only the currently active sector at any instant, unlike conventional DBS which stimulates the entire electrode simultaneously via a spatially static field. By cyclically redistributing stimulation across different angular sub-populations, the invention introduces spatio-temporal heterogeneity that more effectively disrupts pathological synchrony, quantified using phase-synchrony, spectral-entropy and/or cluster-variability indices, than static stimulation. Computational validation demonstrated superior network desynchronisation and restoration of exploratory, reward-guided decision-making relative to conventional stimulation. An optional closed-loop module adaptively tunes rotation frequency, sector count, dwell time or amplitude based on sensed or modelled network activity. Fig.4
