MUMBAI, India, Nov. 2 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202631125523 A) filed by Indian Institute Of Technology Indian School Of Mines, Dhanbad on October 21, 2026, for A Solvometallurgical Process For Recovery Of Vanadium From Vanadium Sludge Using Deep Eutectic Solvent.
Inventors include Suprabha Palatasingh; Aarti Kumari; and Madhulika Gupta.
The application for the patent was published on October 30, 2026, under issue no. 44/2026.
Abstract: A solvometallurgical process for selective recovery of vanadium from vanadium sludge (10) generated as a by-product of the Bayer process, containing aluminium and sodium as major impurities, comprises drying the sludge (10); preparing a deep eutectic solvent (18) by heating and stirring choline chloride as hydrogen-bond acceptor (14) with oxalic acid, ethylene glycol or urea as hydrogen-bond donor (16) until a homogeneous, transparent liquid forms, and cooling it; leaching the dried sludge with the deep eutectic solvent (18) under agitation to form a leach slurry (20), in which vanadium dissolves preferentially over aluminium and sodium; and separating the leach slurry (20) into a vanadium-enriched leach liquor (22) and a leach residue (24) retaining most of the aluminium and sodium. No mineral acid or alkali lixiviant is used. With choline chloride–oxalic acid DES, 30% water, 100 g/L pulp density, 70 °C and 60 minutes, vanadium leaching efficiency exceeds 95%.
