Abstract: The present disclosure relates to a sprayable multifunctional biopolymeric mulch composition and method for preparation thereof for agricultural and horticultural applications. The composition comprises lignin or lignin–chitosan particle stabilization systems, biodegradable film-forming polymers, natural gums, natural resins, plant-derived oils, crosslinking agents, and an aqueous medium configured as a particle-stabilized emulsion. The disclosed formulations are capable of being spray- applied onto soil surfaces to form continuous biodegradable mulch films after drying. The mulch films provide multifunctional soil protection including moisture conservation, weed suppression, soil temperature regulation, erosion reduction, soil conservation and crust prevention. Natural resins enhance film strength and hydrophobicity, while plant-derived oils improve flexibility and moisture barrier properties. The disclosed compositions gradually biodegrade within soil environments without generating persistent plastic residues or microplastic contaminants. The formulations exhibit rheological and stability characteristics suitable for spray application using conventional agricultural spraying systems.
