Abstract: A sustainable crumb rubber-modified bituminous binder composition for flexible pavements and a method for preparation thereof The invention relates to the field of flexible pavement binder compositions and in particular to a sustainable crumb rubber-modified bituminous binder comprising paving-grade bitumen and 10–20 wt% crumb rubber feedstock derived from end-of-life vehicle tyres processed via de-beading, shredding, magnetic separation, air classification and cryogenic or ambient grinding to particles of 0.6–2.36 mm, wherein the bitumen is heated to 160–180 °C. Aromatic maltene fractions of the bitumen diffuse into the cross-linked polymer network of the crumb rubber particles during high-shear mixing (500–1500 rpm for 30–60 min), causing swelling to form a gel-like swollen-rubber phase dispersed within the bitumen, yielding a two-phase interpenetrating rubber–bitumen network. A method and an integrated system (1a–5b) for preparing the composition and producing hot-mix asphalt at 150–175 °C are also disclosed.
