MUMBAI, India, July 30 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202641087462 A) filed by Chennai Institute Of Technology on July 17, 2026, for A Sustainable Green Concrete Composition Incorporating Recycled Glass Powder As A Partial Cement Replacement And A Method For Preparation Thereof.

Abstract: The present invention discloses a sustainable green concrete composition comprising ordinary Portland cement, fine aggregate, coarse aggregate, water and processed recycled glass powder, wherein the glass powder replaces about 10% to about 30% preferably about 15% to about 25% and most preferably about 20% of the cement by weight. The glass powder is ground to a Blaine fineness of about 350 to about 600 m²/kg, with at least 90% passing a 75-micron sieve and a median particle size of about 10 to about 30 microns, a regime found to suppress deleterious alkali-silica reaction while promoting beneficial pozzolanic reactivity of the amorphous silica present in the glass. The finely ground glass powder reacts with calcium hydroxide liberated during cement hydration to form secondary calcium silicate hydrate gel, densifying the concrete microstructure and improving mechanical strength and durability. A corresponding method is disclosed comprising collection, cleaning, crushing and controlled grinding of waste glass, followed by proportioning, mixing with water and an optional superplasticizer, casting and standard water curing. The invention reduces cement consumption and associated carbon dioxide emissions while providing a productive industrial use for waste glass.
