Abstract: ABSTRACT A SYSTEM AND A METHOD FOR ESTIMATING EXTREMES OF A PHYSICAL VARIABLE FOR ENGINEERING DESIGN The present invention provides a system (200) a method that comprises segmenting (104) recorded realizations into a first set of blocks and extracting maxima to generate a first sample space. The first sample space is modelled (106) using a first probability distribution function to compute (108) a first quantile estimate for a predefined return period. The recorded realizations are segmented (110) into smaller blocks to generate a second sample space, modelled (112) using a second probability distribution function of the same family. A conditional distribution of exceedances above a candidate threshold is derived (114), a second quantile estimate is computed (118) using the conditional distribution and a conversion factor. The second quantile estimate is compared (120) with the first quantile estimate, and the threshold is iteratively reduced (122). A final threshold is selected (124) immediately before the second quantile estimate becomes lower than the first quantile estimate.
