Abstract: A system (100) for controlling start-of-injection timing in a gasoline direct injection engine operating on an ethanol-hydrogen dual-fuel mode comprises an intake system supplying hydrogen to an intake port (101) through a flow control valve, a direct fuel injection system injecting liquid ethanol fuel into a combustion chamber (103), one or more engine sensors generating engine operating parameters, and an engine control unit operatively coupled thereto. The engine control unit regulates hydrogen flow, controls a start-of-injection crank-angle position during an intake stroke, acquires combustion performance parameters comprising brake specific fuel consumption, carbon monoxide emission, unburned hydrocarbon emission, and nitrogen oxide emission across a plurality of start-of-injection crank-angle positions and hydrogen flow rates, and determines and applies a start-of-injection crank-angle position satisfying predetermined combustion performance criteria.
