Abstract: The present invention discloses a system and method for passive suppression of nitrogen oxide emissions in a hydrogen-inducted reactivity controlled compression ignition engine 101 through substitution of the conventional diesel pilot fuel with an oxygenated biodiesel blend, without external after-treatment hardware or injection parameter modification. The intrinsic molecular oxygen content of the oxygenated biodiesel blend, covalently bonded within the ester linkage of the biodiesel molecule, accelerates local oxidation kinetics at the pilot fuel spray boundary, shortens combustion duration, and reduces the duration for which combustion gases remain above the thermal nitrogen oxide formation threshold, thereby suppressing nitrogen oxide formation through the Zeldovich mechanism. The invention simultaneously achieves lower nitrogen oxide emissions, higher brake thermal efficiency, lower carbon monoxide, and lower smoke opacity relative to conventional hydrogen-diesel dual-fuel operation, without trade-off in any measured parameter, across a plurality of hydrogen flow rates and engine load conditions.
