Abstract: A SYSTEM FOR UAV-BASED FOREST MAPPING AND TREE DENSITY ESTIMATION A system (100) and method (200) for real-time, onboard forest canopy mapping and tree density estimation are disclosed. The system (100) comprises an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) (102), an imaging unit (104), a sensor suite (106), and an onboard edge computing unit (108). The imaging unit (104) captures continuous aerial video data of a geographical area, while the sensor suite (106) records telemetry data including GPS coordinates, altitude, and acceleration. The onboard edge computing unit (108) extracts image frames, performs preprocessing, and executes a pre-trained deep-learning model to detect individual tree crowns. The onboard edge computing unit (108) further calculates tree density metrics, determines ground coverage area using ground sampling distance (GSD) and field-of-view (FOV) parameters, generates forest canopy mapping information, and correlates detection results with telemetry data to produce ecological analysis data. The system generates real-time annotated outputs and georeferenced forest assessment information without reliance on external computing infrastructure.
