MUMBAI, India, Nov. 2 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202621107607 A) filed by Vishwakarma Institute Of Technology; and Vishwakarma University on September 08, 2026, for A Thermal Management System For Lithium-Ion Cylindrical Cells.

Inventors include Jadhav, Nilesh Ambaji; and Chavan, Umesh Somalu.

The application for the patent was published on October 30, 2026, under issue no. 44/2026.

Abstract: The present invention is related to a thermal management system for lithium-ion cylindrical cells, addressing battery temperature regulation in electric vehicles and energy storage systems. The system comprises a cell casing (2) containing a phase change material (PCM) for passive heat absorption, longitudinal fins (3) to enhance heat dissipation, and a fan for cooling (4) delivering forced air through a J-type channel. Air inlet (5) and dual exhaust vents (6, 7) facilitate efficient airflow, while a battery management system monitors and controls temperature, activating the cooling fan as required. The PCM, comprising paraffin and thermally conductive additives such as graphite, stabilizes cell temperature by absorbing heat during phase transitions. The modular PCM-cell housing structure enables scalability for diverse applications. This hybrid approach improves safety, performance, and longevity of lithium-ion cells, mitigating risks such as thermal runaway and hotspots. The disclosed system is suitable for electric vehicles, renewable energy storage, and other high-performance battery systems.
