MUMBAI, India, July 13 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202611047059 A) filed by Indian Institute Of Technology Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi on April 13, 2026, for A Thermally Controlled Multifunctional Polarization Independent Metasurface.

Abstract: The present invention relates to a thermally controlled multifunctional polarization independent metasurface (100), comprising a meta- layer having a plurality of concentric resonators including an outer square ring (3a) made of a conductive material; a middle circular ring (3b) made of a conductive material; an inner circular ring (3c) made of a phase-change material; a dielectric substrate layer (2) supporting the meta-layer; an additional dielectric layer (4) disposed above or below the meta-layer; a backing layer (1) comprising the phase-change material and the phase-change material is configured to transition between an insulating state and a metallic state based on temperature; and said thermally controlled multifunctional polarization independent metasurface exhibits a transmission and reflection response in the insulating state, and an absorption response in the metallic state and wherein the metasurface is substantially insensitive to polarization due to the symmetric configuration of the unit cell.
