Abstract: Abstract Disclosed is an acetabular cup implant comprising a cup shell defining a concave liner-receiving inner surface and an outer convex hemispherical bone-facing surface. A porous fixation layer is integrally formed on the outer convex hemispherical bone-facing surface and comprises a plurality of tetrapod elements, each comprising a central junction and four outwardly projecting struts. The tetrapod elements are disposed without a repeating unit-cell sequence and are joined with adjacent tetrapod elements to define a continuous surface-integrated network of irregular interconnected pore pathways. The cup shell and the porous fixation layer comprise a unitary biocompatible metal body suitable for formation by metal additive manufacturing. The non-repeating tetrapod arrangement provides a bone-facing surface with heterogeneous pore geometry, increased surface interaction, interconnected spaces for bone in-growth, and improved physical anchoring at the bone– implant interface.
