Abstract: ABSTRACT The present invention relates to an acetate-modulated aluminum-based metal-organic framework (Ac-Al MOF) and its method for the synthesis and application in the removal of pharmaceutical contaminant diclofenac (DCF) from aqueous samples. The MOF is synthesized using aluminum nitrate nonahydrate [A1(NO3)3.9H20] and 1,4-benzenedicarboxylic acid in a 1:1 molar ratio through a solvothermal process at 150°C for 20 h using dimethylformamide (DMF) as solvent, followed by washing and thermal activation at 120°C. The synthesized MOF was characterized using UV—Vis, FTIR, and XRD analyses. The material exhibits good adsorption of DCF from concentrations of 0-750 ppm, reaching adsorption equilibrium within 120 mins and maximum removal at pH 5 and 25 °C. The framework breathing effect resulted in the multilayer behavior of the adsorption process and enhanced contaminant uptake, making the material suitable for effective pharmaceutical wastewater treatment.
