Abstract: ABSTRACT ADAPTIVE ASSISTIVE COMMUNICATION DEVICE WITH PREDICTIVE NEED PRIORITIZATION AND CLOSED-LOOP CAREGIVER ACKNOWLEDGMENT An assistive communication device (100) comprises a microcontroller (102), a storage medium (104) coupled to the microcontroller (102) and configured to store a plurality of pre-recorded audio clips corresponding to a plurality of care-needs, an interaction log, and a learned model, an input interface (106) coupled to the microcontroller (102) and configured to receive user input from one or more input modalities, an audio output unit (108) coupled to the microcontroller (102) and configured to play audio clips from the storage medium (104), a wireless communication module (110) coupled to the microcontroller (102) and configured to transmit alerts to a remote caregiver device (116) and receive acknowledgment signals therefrom, an adaptive prioritization module (202) executed by the microcontroller (102) and configured to compute a priority score for each care-need based on a combination of usage frequency, time-of-day affinity, and a sequence model that determines a probability of each care-need given a previously selected care-need, and to present the plurality of care-needs in an order determined by the computed priority scores, and a caregiver acknowledgment module (204) executed by the microcontroller (102) and configured to, upon selection of a distress care-need or activation of an emergency input (114), transmit an alert to the remote caregiver device (116) via the wireless communication module (110), and upon receiving an acknowledgment signal, cause the audio output unit (108) to play a reassurance message to the user.
