Abstract: The present disclosure pertains to an adaptive dual-gain multilevel inverter apparatus (100) and method (200). The apparatus (100) includes a single direct current (DC) voltage source, a plurality of semiconductor switching elements (S1–S8), a first capacitor (C1) and a second capacitor (C2) and a first diode (D1) and a second diode (D2). The switching elements (S1–S8), capacitors (C1, C2), and diodes (D1, D2) are interconnected in a series–parallel reconfigurable topology configured to selectively connect the capacitors (C1, C2) in parallel with the DC source during charging states and in series with the DC source during discharging states and to generate a plurality of discrete output voltage levels including at an output terminal without requiring an external H-bridge stage. The topology inherently maintains voltage balancing across the first and second capacitors (C1, C2) through said series–parallel reconfiguration without requiring external sensing circuits or active balancing controllers.
