MUMBAI, India, Nov. 2 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202611110322 A) filed by Chandigarh University on September 14, 2026, for Adaptive Modular Staircase With Gait-Responsive Riser Adjustment And Integrated Safety System.

Inventors include Kush Kumar; and Khushi Singh.

The application for the patent was published on October 30, 2026, under issue no. 44/2026.

Abstract: An adaptive modular staircase system is retrofitted along a lateral portion of an existing staircase (101). A modular base frame (102) supports adaptive platforms (103) driven by lifting assemblies (104) between retracted and elevated positions, while a remaining staircase portion stays available for conventional use. A gait-detection sensor (105) determines a user foot-elevation characteristic, load sensors (106) determine occupancy, and a controller (107) sequentially sets platform elevations to reduce effective riser height. LED guidance strips (108) identify an active platform. Obstacle sensors (110) interlock platform movement, and a safety alarm and SOS module (109) generates local and remote alerts upon validated fall detection. A power-management and fail-safe unit (111) provides backup power and mechanically retains the platforms in a stable condition during power or actuator failure. The system automatically returns unloaded platforms to a retracted position after the user clears the adaptive path.
