Abstract: ABSTRACT ADAPTIVE TACTILE MORSE COMMUNICATION SYSTEM WITH HIDDEN MARKOV MODEL DECODING FOR VISUALLY IMPAIRED USERS A tactile communication system (100) for a visually impaired user includes a single tactile input device (104) that receives press inputs, a processing unit (106) that records press durations and gap durations as timing data and decodes the press inputs into Morse code dots and dashes and into text, and an audio output device (130) that outputs the text as speech. An adaptive decoding engine (118) executable by the processing unit (106) applies a hidden Markov model to the timing data to determine a likeliest sequence of Morse symbols and converts the sequence into the text. The adaptive decoding engine (118) iteratively updates the model parameters from the user's timing data during operation, so that decoding adapts to an individual tapping pattern without manual calibration.
