Abstract: An automated agricultural robotic system is provided for efficient cotton harvesting applications. The system comprises a multi-axis robotic arm integrated with a camera-based vision module, a trained object detection model, and a microcontroller-based control system to enable real-time detection, localization, and harvesting of cotton bolls. The robotic arm, actuated using NEMA 17 stepper motors and controlled through an Arduino based platform, performs precise pick-and-place operations using a gripper-based end effector designed to extract cotton without damaging the fibers. The vision system utilizes image processing and deep learning techniques to identify cotton bolls and determine their spatial coordinates, allowing accurate positioning of the robotic arm through inverse kinematics and path planning algorithms. The harvested cotton is subsequently transferred into a storage container, enabling a continuous and automated harvesting cycle. The system is further enhanced by the use of lightweight 3D-printed components and a compact gearbox design to achieve a cost-effective and scalable solution suitable for small and medium-scale farms. The integrated detection–actuation–collection mechanism significantly improves harvesting efficiency, reduces manual labor dependency, and minimizes crop damage compared to conventional manual and mechanical harvesting methods. Key advantages include precise targeted picking, low energy consumption, modular design, and adaptability for future integration with mobile platforms and advanced sensing technologies.
