MUMBAI, India, Sept. 22 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202641108252 A) filed by Pragati Engineering College on September 09, 2026, for Ai-Based Self-Reconfigurable Modular Rescue Robot.

Inventors include Dr. Avinash Gudimetla; Mr. V V N Sarath; Mrs. Kada Tulasi; and Mr. Bomma Bharath Kumar.

The application for the patent was published on September 18, 2026, under issue no. 38/2026.

Abstract: The present invention relates to an AI-Based Self-Reconfigurable Modular Robot for Adaptive Search and Rescue Operations, configured to autonomously adapt its physical configuration and locomotion mode according to terrain conditions, obstacles, accessibility, mission requirements, and detected rescue situations. The proposed robot comprises a plurality of mechanically interconnected robotic modules, an intelligent coupling and reconfiguration mechanism, multimodal environmental sensors, an edge computing unit, an Artificial Intelligence-based decision engine, locomotion actuators, a communication module, a power management system, and a rescue payload interface. The sensing system acquires information relating to terrain geometry, obstacles, human presence, environmental conditions, robot orientation, module configuration, and battery status. The AI decision engine analyses the acquired information and determines an appropriate robot configuration and locomotion strategy. Individual modules can autonomously reconfigure between different configurations for traversing flat surfaces, narrow passages, uneven terrain, debris, slopes, stairs, and other disaster environments. The system continuously evaluates navigation performance and can initiate further reconfiguration when the existing configuration becomes unsuitable. The invention further enables human or victim detection, remote communication, adaptive path planning, energy-aware operation, and fail-safe control. The proposed system provides enhanced mobility, adaptability, operational flexibility, and autonomous decision-making for disaster response, collapsed-structure inspection, hazardous-environment exploration, and search-and-rescue missions.
