Abstract: An AI-enabled automated waste segregation and smart recycling management unit for intelligent identification, classification, physical separation, and real-time monitoring of heterogeneous waste. The proposed unit integrates a vision-based recognition module with multiple material-sensing elements to overcome the limitations of conventional manual and single-sensor waste segregation systems. Upon insertion of a waste item through a common inlet, visual information and physical characteristics, including moisture, weight, and metallic properties, are simultaneously acquired. An AI-based processing unit analyzes the acquired information to predict the waste category and determine an associated confidence level. The prediction is subsequently validated through sensor-data fusion before initiating segregation. Based on the validated decision, a motor-controlled routing mechanism directs the waste into a corresponding organic, plastic, paper, metal, glass, or residual compartment. Low-confidence or uncertain items are automatically diverted to a separate compartment, thereby reducing cross-contamination of recyclable materials. Individual compartment levels are continuously monitored and communicated to a remote management dashboard, enabling timely collection, recycling- status monitoring, and improved waste-management efficiency.
