Abstract: ABSTRACT A runway health monitoring system integrates acoustic sensors with machine learning-based computer vision for real- time detection of runway surface defects, foreign object debris, and subsurface structural anomalies. Acoustic sensors capture vibration and sound patterns to detect subsurface cracks, material disintegration, and impact events. Computer vision modules employ a YOLOv8 object detection model to identify surface-level hazards including cracks, potholes, loose materials, and debris. A data fusion module combines outputs from both sensing modalities to enhance detection accuracy and reduce false positives. The system generates real-time alerts with bounding box annotations, hazard classification, location coordinates, timestamps, and severity indicators, and maintains a chronological event log. The system is deployable on fixed installations or mobile platforms without requiring structural modification of runway surfaces, supporting continuous non-intrusive monitoring for aviation safety enhancement.
